The Contrarian:
The Case for Womanism
by Sally C. Pipes 8/8/08

Dee Dee Myers was the first woman to serve as White House Press Secretary and the youngest ever at 31. She served under President Bill Clinton.  Now she has taken on a more demanding task in Why Women Should Rule the World, a manifesto for what we might call Womanism.

“If there were more women in positions of power,” Dee Dee writes, “not just in Congress, but across the United States and around the world, lots of things would be better. Not perfect. But better. We’d have more representative government; a stronger economy; and a healthier and more sustainable planet. We’d be better able to resolve conflicts and keep the peace. We’d have stronger families.”

Deflating Legislation
by Gary M. Galles 8/8/08

Congress’ summer recess has begun, when Americans get a break from having any new legislation imposed on them.  Unfortunately, however, August will be used to promise constituents new legislative ”solutions” that aren’t or that can only come at others’ expense.  These futile promises to solve every problem by law—what Bruno Leoni called “inflated legislation”—have made government destructive of rights and property.  So as our “public servants” return home to propose further inroads, Leoni’s insights merit recalling. Party Politics vs. Good Governance
by J. F. Kelly, Jr. 8/7/08

Many Americans are suffering financially because of the double whammy of gasoline prices and the collapse of the housing and mortgage markets. On that, at least, Democrats and Republicans can agree except, perhaps for former Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas who apparently thinks it’s all in our heads. Mr. Gramm has, mercifully, faded from the scene after calling us a nation of whiners. What they can’t agree on are the solutions to the problem of high gas prices.

The Republicans push for more domestic drilling offshore, in the Arctic and the oil shale fields of the western states, plus the use of “clean” coal. Democrats promote renewable energy sources, saying that we cannot drill our way out of this crisis. [more]

Governor's Position on Pay Cuts is Legally Sound
by Jon Coupal 8/6/08

California's budget stalemate reflects a political war which has many fronts, a myriad of combatants and an endless series of battles. The battle de jour involves the Governor's executive order laying off thousands of temporary state workers and reducing the pay -- to federal minimum wage level -- of even more full time state workers.

The Controller, John Chiang, has said he will defy the Governor's order as it relates to the reduction of pay for full time workers. In so doing, Chiang is ignoring fairly clear California law which, in fact, vests the power to reduce salaries in the Executive Branch. Therefore, as a matter of law, Governor Schwarzenegger has the constitutional authority to direct the State Personnel Board to do what he has ordered. [more]
