Congressional Staff Discuss Iran's End Times Theology, Nuclear Threat With
Iran vowing to defy the international community and accelerating its nuclear
program, interest in truly understanding Iran's intentions are growing in Washington.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of addressing about 75 Congressional and Bush
administration staffers on the topic of "The Iranian President's End Times
Theology and Its Implications for U.S. Foreign Policy."
We discussed why Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is saying that the end of the world is
rapidly approaching, and why he believes that the way to hasten the coming
of the Islamic Messiah known as the “Hidden Imam” or the “12th Imam” or the “Mahdi” is
to launch a global jihad to annihilate Israel (the “little Satan”) and the
U.S. (the “Great Satan”). We also discussed Ahmadinejad's 18-page letter to
President Bush, the speech he gave to the United Nations last fall in which
he believes that he was surrounded by an angel of light, and his latest gambit
-- demanding a debate with President Bush. The first question that was asked
when my presentation was finished: How should the U.S. respond to a leader
who believes it is his religious mission to bring about the end of days, and
who is feverishly pursuing the arsenal and alliances needed to bring his apocalyptic
vision to pass? That, indeed, is the central question of the hour. We discussed
it at length and I encouraged these staffers to help the leaders they serve
get up to speed quickly on the radical Shi'ite End Times theology (or, eschatology)
held by Ahmadinejad and his inner circle. Only then will they fully appreciate
how dangerous is the current crisis and how little time the U.S. has to make
a decision of how to stop Iran from launching its genocidal plans.

Journalists' Forced
Conversion Not Contrary to Islam by Robert
Spencer - The most bizarre element of the two weeks
of captivity suffered by Fox News reporter Steve
Centanni and photographer Olaf Wiig was the video that
surfaced depicting their conversion to Islam. Even
before the
journalists revealed that their conversions had
been coerced, there were indications that they were
not acting freely. While reading a statement he himself
had ostensibly written, Centanni stumbled over words,
appeared to puzzle over the handwriting, and seemed
to grimace after pronouncing the words “peace
be upon him” after the name of the Islamic
prophet Muhammad.
Most jarring was the video editor's invocation of the favorite Koran verse
of Western analysts of Islam and terrorism, "There is no compulsion in
religion" (2:256). The irony of featuring this verse in a video depicting
two forced conversions has been widely noted. In fact, however, the juxtaposition
of this verse with the video of Centanni and Wiig was probably not simply transparent
deception, as strange as that may seem.
Islamic law forbids forced conversion, but as Andrew Bostom documented
earlier this week, this is a law that throughout Islamic history has all
too often been honored in the breach... [full

Rome To Lead Mideast Peace Force Not
since the fall of the Roman Empire has Rome stationed military
forces in or near the Holy Land. But the current government
in Rome has just formally offered to lead the U.N. peacekeeping
force that will be stationed in southern Lebanon, on the
border with Israel. "Italian prime minister Romano Prodi
made the offer on Monday (21 August) and it has been accepted
by Beirut," reported
the E.U. Observer. Italy's
parliament has authorized up to 3,000 troops be sent to
the region. For the moment, Prodi is planning to send 2,000.
The move was a dramatic and unexpected one, given
Italy's more recent history of reticence to be involved in Mideast affairs.
What's interesting is that Bible prophecy -- notably the Books of Daniel and
Revelation -- suggest a revived Roman Empire will emerge in the "last days" before
the return of Jesus Christ to earth and that a Roman dictator known by theologians
as the "Antichrist" will eventually sign a peace treaty will Israel, and then
break that covenant and try to destroy the Jewish State, a move that will lead
to the battle of Armageddon. Such events don't occur until after the "rapture" --
the disapperance of true followers of Jesus Christ from the earth -- but many
evangelical Christians believe the rapture is an increasingly immiment event.
The sudden emergence of Rome as a critical player in the Mideast peace process
will do nothing to dampen that belief.
Meanwhile, Germany
will commit some 1,200 troops to the
U.N. force, mostly by way of naval and air forces. This is a dramatic step
as well, given that not since the Nazis sought to takeover the whole of North
Africa and the Middle East have German military forces been anywhere close
to the region.

'Holy Jihad Brigade' Gives 72 Hours To Release Muslims Held in US Prisons in Journalist Exchange A post Thursday from Global Islamic Media Front included further information on the two Fox News journalists held captive in Gaza. The post included links to the video, a written statement, and images of the ID's of Steve Centani and Olaf Wiif, including the driver's license for Centanni. The video can be downloaded from http://www.lauramansfield.com/j/fox.wmv. It's interesting to note that their demand is for the US to release "all male and female Muslim prisoners in the American prisons". This is a demand that is impossible to meet. - A 72 hour deadline beginning Wednesday, August 23, was set. A translation of the images containing scans of the two page message here.

Angelides' Policies Would Imperil State's
Economy Sir Winston Churchill once said that "for
a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man
standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up
by the handle." It appears Phil Angelides wants
to put the entire state of California into that bucket,
then fill the bucket with concrete just to make it
a little more challenging.
Angelides, the Democratic nominee in the governor's race, has exactly the wrong philosophy for California's economy. His proposals to expand the size and scope of government are estimated to cost more than $18 billion -- that's nearly 14 percent of the entire state budget. The only positive thing that can be said about his plan is that he hasn't been shy -- up to now -- about his intentions. But any intention to raise taxes -- even disclosed -- is still bad.
The California economy is currently rebounding from the economic crisis of three years ago, but it is still vulnerable. Higher taxes -- any higher taxes -- could derail this engine of prosperity.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in contrast, has a record that is decidedly taxpayer friendly. When he came into office, he immediately followed through on a campaign promise to reverse the tripling of the car tax. This saved California motorists about $4 billion per year.
Phil Angelides called that tax reduction "wrong-headed," but this is no surprise. There are few taxes for which Angelides has yet to oppose an increase. The car tax, the sales tax, the income tax, the alcohol tax, farm taxes, taxes on services such as auto repair have all been targets of Angelides efforts to increase state revenues at the expense of already heavily burdened taxpayers. He's even taken aim at dismantling the property tax protections of Proposition 13. His philosophy on taxes appears to be rather simple: More is better.
But more isn't better -- unless we are talking about the growth in state revenues that has resulted from Schwarzenegger's holding the line taxes. Let's be clear. Thanks to his fiscally sound approach, the economy has boomed. Personal income is growing at a rate of 6 percent a year. There are nearly 600,000 new jobs in the state. Revenues are up, allowing for record spending for education and other state programs that even some of the Governor's most vocal critics have applauded.
So what is a natural tax-and-spend liberal to do? Under pressure by supporters to resuscitate a comatose campaign with ten weeks to go before the election, Angelides has released his own tax plan that he claims would benefit the middle class.
His plan is troubling on two levels. First, it runs contrary to Angelides' career-long philosophy on taxation. And second, he has given no indication that he will scale back on his spending plans to pay for $1.4 billion in tax breaks. Taxpayers have a right to be suspicious that if Angelides agrees to stop reaching into one of their pockets, he intends to reach into another pocket through other forms of taxation.
This is an unfortunate trend with Angelides. He has proposed a number of spending plans along the campaign trail but never answered the question, "How will you pay for it?" He wants to dramatically increase school funding, supports state-run single-payer health care, says he will close the budget deficit, and advocates immediate universal health care for California children, among other spending. His only on-the-record plan to pay for these things: raising taxes on the "wealthy" and closing "corporate tax loopholes." He has failed to detail these "loopholes" and how much he would bring in from them. And he claims all of his spending will only require $5 billion in higher taxes, which is akin to trying to buy a Ferrari at the 99 Cents Store.
When it comes to Angelides' tax plans, taxpayers are forced to conclude that either he does not plan to follow through on his promises, or he plans a massive tax hike to pay for them all -- a tax hike that will inflict great harm to California's middle class.
It is fortunate that the media are not buying Angelides' attempt to recast himself as a taxpayer champion. Indeed, the word "pandering" was heard more than once this week when reporters got together to compare notes. By word and deed, Angelides has spent a political lifetime tattooing the word "tax raiser" on his forehead. Although he can cover it up with a hat that says "tax cutter," everybody knows the tattoo is still there.

CNN tells us to ‘Know Your Enemy’ — and gives us Christianne
Amanpour A CNN documentary titled “In the Footsteps of bin Laden” premiered
Wednesday night at 9:00 PM ET. The commercial for it had the caption “Know
Your Enemy.” Ironically enough, it was hosted by Christianne Amanpour,
the British-Iranian pro-Muslim propagandist who sold the West on the anti-Serb
wars that allied us with bin Laden-trained terrorists in Bosnia and Kosovo.
She even reported from a Serbian graveyard, claiming to be at a Bosnian-Muslim

Bibliography - My Writings on the Changing Face of Warfare: Warfare
in recent decades has turned historic
assumptions upside down. Countries used to be the enemy; now regimes are
the enemy, while their subject peoples are our friend. Battlefield
superiority used to be the goal, now it is assumed before a shot is fired.
Victory used to be the goal, now it's peace. Promoting one's own interests
was the exclusive goal, now helping
the defeated is no less important. Victors used to plunder the vanquished;
now victors fund the defeated.
Rooting for one's own side was once assumed, while helping the enemy was treasonous;
now, allegiance has become
a legitimately open question.
I hope to chip systematically away at this topic. Here is a bibliography of my writings on this subject, with additions as needed:
- “Mysterious America.” IntellectualCapital.com, April 1, 1999. While objective indices point to unparalleled American power, subjective realities paint a much murkier picture of confusion, insularity and reluctance.”
- “Attack U.S. and Win Aid.” (with Jonathan Schanzer), New York Post, January 28, 2002. Considers and criticizes the "mouse that roared"” syndrome.
- “War's New Face.” New York Post, April 16, 2003. Analyses six features of modern warfare
- “War as Social Work?” New York Post, May 6, 2003. Assesses the odd development of judging hostilities less in terms of what they do for oneself than what benefits they affect the other side.
- “The End of Treason.” The New York Sun, August 16, 2005. Documents and explains why the concept of treason is nearly defunct.
- “The Lebanon War's Strange Logic.” The New York Sun, August 15, 2006. Considers the topsy-turvy situation in which combatants show themselves in stress.

P.S. to “How Broadway Divas Think” I just remembered that
the same Patti Lupone who commended Vanessa Redgrave’s pro-PLO politics
(see glob below) came back from a Spain vacation just a few months before the
deadly attacks on Madrid, saying that it’s the Muslim influence in the
south of Spain that “gives the area its allure and magic.”
And I just want to tell her, “Um actually, Patti, magic is when you can put the people back together again. That’s usually how that trick goes. Otherwise, I think it’s called terrorism.” [Go to Julia Gorin's Glob]

How Broadway Divas Think On her website,
the original Broadway Evita Patti Lupone blogs about
her travels in “Ramblings from the Road,” commenting, “What
a mess this world is. If we send bombs to Israel we
had better be building bomb shelters for the people
of Lebanon. What is going on? Everybody wants peace,
I know it. And, you know, I think back to Vanessa Redgrave
and her politics of the 60’s and 70’s…”
This one just “knows” that everyone wants peace — despite the evidence to the contrary thrown at us on a daily basis. But let’s go along. Let’s think like Patti. This means that:
If Lupone’s bodyguards carry guns, she’d better buy bullet-proof vests for her stalkers.
If pharmaceutical companies provide AIDS drugs, they should make the HIV virus resistant to the drugs.
And if Planned Parenthood provides abortion services, they’d better support anti-abortion legislation.
Because we really shouldn’t take sides. [Go to Julia Gorin's Glob]

A
Tepid Response to Palestinian Thuggery The
Palestinian kidnapping of Fox news correspondent Steve
Centanni and camerman Olaf Wing is now in its seventh
day, and it's interesting to note the flabby response
from both the media and so-called journalism "protection" organizations
-- which are usually quick to condemn Israel and the
U.S. authorities in Iraq.
The usually garrulous Committee to Protect Journalists issued a tepid
statement expressing "concern," and the media generally has kept its distance.
The New York Times, typically, buried a tiny reference to the kidnapping
in a news
roundup two days later. Obviously the Times was hoping that Centanni
would be swiftly released, and delayed mentioning the kidnapping in the hope
that it could report news of his release at the same time. Mustn't upset the
myth of Palestinian moderation!
Another big problem with the kidnapping, from the standpoint of pro-Palestinian
mouthpieces like the Times, is that it is part of a pattern of Palestinian
intimidation of journalists, as noted in an excellent FrontPage
Magazine article Thursday.
The media has ignored that aspect of the kidnappings, and instead has even
used the kidnappings to give a publicity plug to terrorists, such as in this ludicrous
AP story today quoting an Islamic Jihad terorist saying what a terrible
thing it is to kidnap people.
It will be interesting to see if the media picks up on the FrontPage Magazine
article, and puts the kidnapping in context. Don't hold your breath. [go

Thank
you, Mike Wallace! Intelligence agencies, you’ve
been put on alert. In Mike Wallace’s
interview with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,
the senile-from-birth CBS journalist called the
Hezbollah-backer “an impressive fellow,” “obviously
smart as hell,” “reasonable,” and “an
interesting man.” Wallace also said, “He
couldn’t have been more accommodating. He
had a good time doing the interview.” Furthermore,
Ahmadinejad “didn’t propagandize,” made
his case “fairly rationally” and was “infinitely
more rational than I had expected him to be.” According
to World
Net Daily, “Wallace concluded that Ahmadinejad
was sincere in his hope for peaceful coexistence
between Iran and the West.”
FLASHBACK:
It’s 1998. ABC Nightline decides to do an interview with Osama bin Laden, who has declared war on America. The assignment goes to correspondent John Miller. From Paul L. Williams’ 2005 book The Al Qaeda Connection:
Bin Laden, to the network’s astonishment, graciously consented to the interview, leading ABC executives to believe that the emir must be either a fan of Nightline or else a Muslim leader in search of publicity…
The interview between Miller and bin Laden took place in Afghanistan on May 28, 1998. Osama was all smiles as Miller obsequiously hailed him as a ‘hero to his followers’ and ‘the Middle East version of Teddy Roosevelt…
John Miller’s interview with bin Laden was aired on June 8, 1998. On August 7, 1998, the US embasies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed.
I’d say we’ve had enough examples of networks functioning as indicators of imminent attacks, based on whom they’re trying to ingratiate to us. By now, the intelligence community should be using major media interviews as red flags, and should base their timelines for anticipating attacks on media interviews with lunatics. More on the term "Islamic Fascists" George W. Bush had used "Islamic
fascists" and "Islamofascists" often before but, for reasons that elude me, his
statement on Aug. 10 turned this wording into a major issue, with dozens of articles,
pro and con, debating the term. I myself weighed in today with an article titled "‘At
War with Islamic Fascists'." Here are some of the discussions that struck
me as particularly worthwhile, with additions as they appear:
- Abdel Rahman al-Rashed, "بالتأكيد هم فاشيون" ("They Certainly Are Fascists"). August 13, 2006. The general manager of Al-‘Arabiya news channel, who has already proven his bravery, asks "What's wrong with describing terrorists with any negative term?"
- Timothy R. Furnish, "Islamic Fascism': Well, It's Half Right." August 14, 2006. Argues that this term "should be avoided because it's simply another way to let Islam off the hook."

Newspaper Lays Out Scenario For Mideast Apocalypse - Says
Russia, Turkey could be involved Picking
up on the Wall Street Journal oped by Bernard
Lewis about Iran's end-of-the-world religious passions,
the Russian newspaper Pravda has laid out its
own scenario
for a nuclear apocalypse in the Middle
East.
1. The war in Lebanon continues to flare.
2. Hezbollah fires Iranian missiles at Israel,
but Israel intercepts those missiles, as it intercepted the Scuds fired in
1991 by Iraq.
3. Israel attacks Iranian nuclear sites, perhaps
with the help of the U.S. Navy. Iran launches a full-scale counter attack against
Israeli cities and American warships.
4. Turkey gets dragged into the war,
as does Russia and all Hell breaks loose. Pravda: "Very soon such
participants as Turkey will inevitably get dragged into the funnel
of war. In Iraq and Afghanistan anti-government militant groups will
become very active. Finally the conflict will focus on the fighting
for the control over the territories with major oil resources. That
is exactly with the U.S. is after. The eventual possession of the
oil treasury by one of the conflicting sides will provoke harsh resistance
from both Asia and Europe. Russia is also very likely to get provoked
into becoming an active participant. In the end this might become
the Ultimate Fifth Act, in which no one wishes to believe…"
“Such a scenario does not seem too unrealistic
to me,” Sergey Markov, a Russian political scientist, told Pravda. “These
days anything is possible in the Middle East. People living there
are crazy and they constantly keep playing with fire. Their situation
has gone out of control and is ready to explode any minute. In fact,
the new world war is already going in that place.”

The Left is Falling For The New Hitler Is
the American Left completely blind to the existential threat
posed by radical Islamic leaders such as Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad?
Last night I was on MSNBC and later on the Alan Colmes radio show. I was completely taken aback by how quickly the hosts and guests dismissed the apocalyptic, genocidal theology and rhetoric coming out of Tehran. They completely dismissed Iran's recent $1 billion arms deal with Moscow. They couldn't care less about Iran's feverish pursuit of nuclear weaponry. Something very troubling is happening. In the past, liberals I've spoken with agreed that Iran is a problem but argued that Ahmadinejad is not a big enough threat to go to war over. But that is changing fast. In the last 24 hours, liberals have begun saying Iran is little or no threat at all. They're saying President Bush is more dangerous than Ahmadinejad, and that those of us who are noting the chilling similarities between Ahmadinejad and Adolf Hitler are off our rockers. Alan Colmes last night actually tried to make the case to me that the Iranian leader is all talk and no action and that the Russians arming Iran is no different than the U.S. providing defensive arms to Israel.
Sure, Alan, Neville Chamberlain was convinced that Hitler was no threat either. But Chamberlain was wrong and tens of millions died by such horrific miscalculations. Are you prepared to miscalculate just as badly? Apparently so.
Did you hear Sean Hannity's interview Thursday with "60 Minutes" host Mike Wallace? Unbelievable. Sean did a great job, but Wallace was appalling. Wallace has become an apologist for one of the most dangerous men on the planet. Despite the fact that Ahmadinejad wants to bring about the end of the world, deny the Holocaust, and wipe Israel and the U.S. "off the map," Wallace actually called Ahmadinejad a "reasonable" and "sincere" man who was in no way trying to use the CBS interview for propaganda purposes. Wallace said Ahmadinejad believes the time for using bombs is over, that he wants a peaceful coexistence between Iran and the West, and that the Iranian leader is not anti-Jewish, only "anti-Zionist." In an interview with Reuters, Wallace went on to call Ahmadinejad a "rather attractive man, very smart, savvy, self-assured, good looking in a strange way...He's very, very short but he's comfortable in his own skin."
How does one respond to such utter nonsense? Moreover, how does one deal with such blindness to evil? To misunderstand the nature of evil is to risk being blindsided by it. America was blinded by Hitler in the 1930s because we didn't understand the evil he posed. We were blindsided by Japan at Pearl Harbor. We were blindsided on 9/11. I fear we may be blindsided by Iran as well. After all, once Ahmadinejad has nuclear weapons (he already has the missiles to deliver them), he will be able to accomplish in about 6 minutes what it took Hitler 6 years to do -- kill 6 million Jews. And remember, Israel is the just the "little Satan" for Ahmadinejad. The U.S. is the "Great Satan" and thus the ultimate target.
In slobbering all over the Tyrant of Tehran, CBS has completely lost it. But they are not alone. The American Left is falling for the new Hitler. God help us all.

Nyer Hangs Tough After 56 years in Israel,
he still compares the height of the local mountains to
the Catskills. Now 80, Bill Selah - formerly William
Silverman of The Bronx - is one of the men who built
Israel. And he won't let terrorists rockets drive him
away.
Smack on the border with Lebanon, Kibbutz Sasa has been Bill's home since 1950, when he left the Merchant Marine to join his older brother in Israel. Founded in January 1949, only months after Israel's birth, Sasa was an American-Jewish vision, drawing idealists from Los Angeles, Chicago, Milwaukee - and, above all, New York City.
Utopian dreamers, well-educated city kids trained for agricultural work on a farm in New Jersey. World War II put their plans on hold for a bit, but after Germany's defeat they flocked to Britain's Palestine Mandate territory, entering illegally.
The kibbutz's early years were marked by backbreaking work and a struggle just to survive. A pioneer outpost on Israel's front line, Sasa had poor land and little water. Faced with harsh conditions, some of the founders gave up. It was only after a quarter century that the kibbutz gained a firm footing - thanks to capitalism's rescue of the old socialist vision.
Bill hung in there through all of it. (When a guy from The Bronx starts something, he finishes it.) Today, Sasa's a lovely garden on a hill, surrounded by orchards and vineyards. A tourist lodge - all are welcome - overlooks a Biblical landscape. The kibbutz is booming financially, thanks to two factories that fund the old back-to-Eden dream. One of the plants has had a series of $100 million contracts with Oshkosh Trucks to make armor plating for U.S. military vehicles headed for Iraq. The factory continues working, despite the war.
As for the proud kibbutzniks, Bill Saleh embodies their attitude toward terrorism: He won't run, and his wife, Nurit, is staying put, too. After all, Bill first faced "Katyushas" on leave in 1944 as the Nazi buzz-bombs streaked the skies over London. He was relaxed and full of life as we shared a dinner in his home on Sunday night - while artillery boomed down in the valley.
The kibbutz's children have been evacuated deeper into Israel. But the old guard stands fast - the community dining hall proudly displays the scraps of a Katyusha that just missed. The hearts of Sasa are stronger than any rockets.
Sasa's a living monument to the spirit that built Israel from the dust. Helped by Bill from The Bronx.

Why
Lieberman? Mel
Gibson is evidently a fool with hateful views. Nothing justifies them and the
fact that he has some power in my movement worries me. It also makes me sad that
the good things he has done will have to be considered again in the light of
his bad ideas.
However,
today Israel is fighting for its life. Its foe, really Iran,
hates Israel and would wipe it off the map. A man who is
hateful, an open anti-Semite, leads it and he has money and
great power. It is very sad that the great Persian nation
is in the hands of such a wicked man and applauds him.
Gibson or Iran: I know which worries me more, but both worry me some. Anti-Semitism
is raging in the world and we know where that leads on the right and on the
left. We cannot fight it too hard or forget the horrors of my grandparents’ time.
The cost was too great.
Given that, why is Lieberman the target of the anti-War left? What is the Left’s plan to deal with Iran? Assuming one is not a pacifist, and almost no Christians in any place or time have been pacifists, what would Lamont do to tame Iran?
Why did the far Left go after religious Old Joe and not rising star Hilary?
No Republican is going to elect Mel to anything now, but the crazy left may finish off Lieberman. Why Lieberman?
It worries me the same way Pat Buchanan’s rumblings about neo-Cons who suddenly all have “Jewish” names when he speaks worry me, but Pat’s types are not very welcome in today’s Republican party. What is the sub-text of the attack on Lieberman?
I am afraid of the answer. We need, really need, two sane and healthy parties. [John Mak Reynolds blog]

Is
Iran
Planning Apocalypse For August 22? Is
Iran planning an apocalyptic strike against Israel for August 22nd? It's a question
concerning a growing number of Israeli leaders and U.S. officials in the White
House, at CIA, and the Pentagon, and for good reason. Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad believes the end of the world is fast approaching. He believes the
way to hasten the coming of the Islamic Messiah is to launch a catastrophic global
jihad -- first against Israel (the "little Satan") and then against the U.S.
(the "Great Satan"). In recent days, he has been sending hints that Iran will
answer the United Nations regarding its nuclear program on August
22nd. That happens to be a very significant date for Muslims, as it
is the anniversary of the supposed "night flight" by Mohammed from earth to heaven
and back from Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Some experts believe Ahmadinejad's "response" could
come in the form of an apocalyptic attack on Israel. It is this type of attack
that I write about in The
Ezekiel Option and The
Copper Scroll, based on Bible prophecy.
The Hebrew Prophet Ezekiel, writing 2,500 years ago about a Russian-Iranian alliance
to annihilate Israel, described something called the war of "Gog and Magog." Jews
and Christians believe the God of Israel will supernaturally intervene to defeat
Russia, Iran and their Islamic allies in this war. The Muslim
version of the war of "Gog
and Magog" is found in the Koran and
concludes with Muslims winning the war. I based my last two novels on this prophetic
war and its aftermath. But this is no longer the stuff of fiction. It is becoming
all too real.
WSJ:
Scholar Warns Iran's Ahmadinejad May Have 'Cataclysmic Events' In Mind For August
22
Tue Aug 08 2006
In a Wall Street Journal op-ed Tuesday,
Princeton's Bernard Lewis writes: "There is a radical difference between the
Islamic Republic of Iran and other governments with nuclear weapons. This difference
is expressed in what can only be described as the apocalyptic worldview of Iran's
present rulers." "In Islam as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain
beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time -- Gog and Magog, anti-Christ,
Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam,
ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may
be defined." President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "and his followers clearly believe
that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is
indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references
by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the US about nuclear development
by Aug. 22," which this year corresponds "to the 27th day of the month of Rajab
of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate
the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to
'the farthest mosque,' usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven
and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1)."This might well be deemed an appropriate date
for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far
from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely
for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind."

P.S.
to yesterday’s depressing glob Increasingly,
instead of the term anti-Semitism when referring to
discrimination against Jews, terms such as religious
bigotry,” or religious slurs or religious discrimination
are being used. Granted, “anti-Semitism” is
overused–including by Jews themselves, who have
been known to cry wolf with it. However, when I saw
on the current cover of People Magazine the words “Mel
Gibson…apologizes for spewing religious slurs,” I
started thinking there’s usually a reason for
the language trends that the media sets in motion;
there’s usually an end to their means.
Without jumping to conclusions and sounding like a Jew with a persecution complex, I fear the goal here may be to downplay what is already a disturbing worldwide trend of dangerous anti-Semitism, whose end result has historically been genocide. The word “religious” helps divorce the mind from “ethnicity,” “racism” and “genocide.” And generally speaking, accusations of “racism” are doled out more stingily when it’s racism against Jews than when it’s racism against other minorities. If the presses have us thinking that it’s a religion being targeted and not a people, then the threat seems less imminent. But it shouldn’t.
In the early history of anti-Semitism, it was indeed Judaism as a religion that was targeted. Next, it was Jewish blood that was the problem. Today the virus has mutated into targeting “Zionism.” But the constant is a people under siege. Those who today say Jews are targeted because of Israeli policies, or Zionism itself, are too scared to admit that we’re staring down the dark barrel of what we’ve only read about in history books. Mel’s “Truth Serum” Exposed too Many of the Rest of
Us I don’t
know if anyone else has pointed this out, but what Mel Gibson gave voice to in
his not-so-drunken eruption last week was nothing different from what a sizeable
chunk of the country has been saying about recent wars. The only difference is
that Mel slipped and actually used the word “Jews” instead of using
the usual code words like neocons, Zionists and the Jewish/Israeli lobby (recall
the Harvard report by Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer which said essentially
that the U.S. is being led around by the nose by the Israeli lobby and the friends
of Israel in violation of its national interests). So the “truth serum” that
everyone is talking about exposed a lot of people, who were then–as you
might imagine–all too eager to slam Gibson, as a way of distinguishing
their anti-Semitism from his. This includes Jews who also rail against “the
neocons.” (See Sydney Blumenthal’s “The
Neocons’ Next
War.”)
While forgiveness is right and fair and natural, the eagerness to forgive–as witnessable from two late-night programs I saw last week in the heat of the controversy–may have as much to do with people being annoyed by Jews as with their sympathy for Mel.
In a way, Gibson’s arrest and the non-event that the public wants it to be are a metaphor for the world’s relapse into anti-Semitism, which is frequently called by another name.
Last week’s report indicating that 61% of Democrats believe it’s OK for us to feed Israel to the wolves is significant. [Go to Julia Gorin's Glob]

The
Relentless Propaganda Bombardment The
New York Times today kept up its relentless propaganda
barrage on behalf of Hezbollah -- really sticking its neck
out compared to other U.S. media and even CNN.
Day after day, the Times has made no effort whatever to show balance, putting
Israeli reports of casualties etc. on a par with the proven liars of a terrorist
organization. Its reports from south Lebanon function as a thinly disguised
tool for their correspondents' unseen Hezbollah handlers. As usual, the Times
did not bother to devote a separate story to the record barrage of rockets
on Israel. That would not, of course, advance the Hezbollah line.
Here's the rundown from south Lebanon today:
* Reporting from
Baalbek, house terrorism
apologist Hassan "Wrong
Man" Fattah functions loyally in his accustomed role as Hezbollah propagandist.
As has been its practice in recent days, the Times reports on the battles in
south Lebanon entirely from the Hezbollah perspective, pushing hard the Hezbollah
line. Fattah's sources: the "mayor" of the town (no possible Hezbollah ties!),
someone named "Ali Saeed" who claimed to be a "relative" of some poor poor
innocent Lebanese killed by the Israelis, another "Ali" who is an obvious Hezbollah
member even to the clueless Fattah, and ending with a quote from the "mayor." That
assumes that he really is the "mayor." Remember that this is "Wrong Man" Fattah!
* In another Lebanese town we have a report from
another Hezbollah mouthpiece-Times correspondent. The Hezbollah murderers have
morphed into "militiamen" -- one of the softball terms the Times loves to use
when referring to terrorists. This ones harkens back to the Minutemen of 1776.
Patriots fighting a ruthless foe! The point of this story, one that the Times
hammers away at every chance it gets, is that Hezbollah is viewed as a "defender" by
south Lebanese villagers -- including, presumably, the ones who are stopped
from leaving or shot at, as even the Times has reported. This piece is unabashed
puffery for Hezbollah:
"How could you stay silent when you see your land burn and your children get killed?" said Mr. Yahia, who said he was a platoon commander with the local defense force [Times-speak for "Hezbollah"]. "The whole population here is resisting."In Lebanon, maybe. But to the dilettantes at the Times, the romantic allure of terrorism "irresistible" -- as long as Katyushas aren't being lobbed at their apartments on West End Avenue. [go to Mediacrity blog]

German
Troops to the MIddle East? The battle for Jerusalem
continues to escalate. Syria is mobilizing its forces. So is
Iran. And Israel sent some 10,000 ground troops into southern
Lebanon overnight. I write fictionally about a battle for control
of the holy city in my new novel, The Copper Scroll. But this
morning comes news that another element of my previous novel
may be coming true.
On page 243-246 of The Ezekiel Option, I write about the possibility that Germany may participate in the prophetic "War of Gog and Magog" against Israel, along with Russia, Turkey, Iran and other Islamic countries.
On page 335 of The Ezekiel Option, Israeli intelligence reports that German troops are being sent to southern Lebanon to join an international alliance against Israel. At the time I wrote the novel, the German angle seemed like one of the more far-fetched elements in the book.
But this may not be fiction for long. This morning, the Jerusalem Post reports the disturbing news that German troops may, in fact, be sent to southern Lebanon, ostensibly as part of an international "stabilization" force. This follows recent reports that Turkey could lead this force, and that Russian troops may go to the borders of Israel as well.
"Politicians and bureaucrats are thinking the unthinkable: Send German troops to the Middle East, to the northern border of the Jewish state," reports the Post. "Is it in the German interest to send troops? Yes, it is. First, the moral aspect: not despite the Holocaust, but because of the Holocaust. If German troops guard Israel's northern border, they are there to protect Jewish lives against the rocket attacks of Hizbullah. There has never been a better reason for soldiers in German uniform....Germany is aspiring to a larger role in world, and the Federal government has not given up its dream of a permanent seat on the UN Security Council....Participitation in a Middle East peace effort would probably be the most ambitious, most dangerous mission for the Bundeswehr so far. But if Germany is serious about showing the world that it wants to shoulder more responsibility, this is the chance to do it."

MSNBC Mocks CNN for Rosenberg Segment on Whether
These Are "The Last Days": MSNBC is mocking
CNN for asking me if we are living in the "last days" and for being obsessed
with the Mideast war and Bible prophecy. What's more, a left-wing media watchdog
group seems completely baffled by all the national interest in whether we
are living in the end times. But CNN and others are continuing to ask questions.
And they should. As I told one interviewer today, we are approaching the
end of radical Islam as we know it.
Media Matters wrote: "On the 'Beat the Press' segment of the July 27 edition of MSNBC's Tucker, MSNBC producer Willie Geist discussed a segment of the July 26 edition of CNN's Live From ... in which anchor Kyra Phillips talked about the Apocalypse and the Middle East with Christian authors Jerry Jenkins and Joel C. Rosenberg -- who share the view that the Rapture is nigh. As Media Matters for America noted, Phillips asked Jenkins and Rosenberg if we are 'living in the last days' and whether she needed 'to start taking care of unfinished business and telling people that I love them and I'm sorry for all the evil things I've done.' Geist also mentioned a segment from the July 24 edition of Paula Zahn Now in which, as Media Matters noted, onscreen text read 'End of the World?' Geist stated that Phillips 'is getting a little nervous' and that CNN 'certainly seem[s] to have doomsday on the brain.' He concluded that CNN should 'lighten up a little bit.'" To read the transcript, please click here.
But to
the surprise of many -- and the shock of some -- CNN hasn't
backed down in the face of such sniping. To the contrary,
the network is pursuing the story even further. Tonight,
Paula Zahn spent not one but two full segments examining
evangelical views that we are living in the end of days.
On Friday, Zahn's producers sent a camera crew to my home
to get my thoughts. Tonight's piece ran several
excerpts from that interview in which I explained
the list of signs Jesus tells us to watch as warning signs
of His return -- wars, rumors of wars, revolutions, famines,
earthquakes, persecution of the believers, the spread of
the gospel, the rebirth of the State of Israel, and so
forth. They also asked me to explain various Biblical and
evangelical terms like the "Rapture," and the "Tribulation" and "Armageddon," which
they then explained to viewers quite carefully, with Scripture
and graphics to make it understandable.
I commend CNN for their interest. Tens of millions of Americans are intrigued
with this story, and CNN is doing a good job covering it.
The Christian Broadcasting Network is also very interested in this story,
as you might imagine. Pat Robertson interviewed me at length this morning
about The
Copper Scroll, why my novels keep coming true, and
the Biblical prophecies behind them. I told him point blank that I believe
the prophecies in Ezekiel make clear that we are approaching "the end of
radical Islam as we know it." To understand what I meant -- and to read the
transcript in full -- please

Inside
Today's Beirut Times The
Beirut Times (New York edition) (a/k/a "The New York
Times) continued its gavel-to-gavel
coverage of the poor poor defenseless Lebanese villagers
being pounded unmercifully and for no reason whatsoever
by those horrible Israelis. Coverage even extended to the
Arts pages, where the Beirut Times discussed how
those horrible Israelis have cripped the local cultural
secene.
The B.T., as it is affectionately known, ventured into enemy territory for
a perfunctory
story that finally told what happened to all those hundreds of thousands
of Israelis forced out of their homes by Hezbollah death rockets. You've got
to figure there has been no impact on the Israeli cultural scene as there was
no article on that, but it wouldn't matter anyway, they being the enemy and
this being the Beirut Times.
Inside the paper was a full-page ad (STOP THE SLAUGHTER, blah blah blah) calling
for Israeli surrender to terrorism. This was from the usual suspects of the
anti-Israel-Jewish community, including Michael Lerner, Artie Waskow, and other
kooks and moonbats. You really have to wonder why these clowns bother. Since
we know what they are going to say at any given moment -- Israelis bad bad
bad! -- do they really have to say it?
Also it was strange that they paid good money to run their ad in the B.T.,
since the viewpoint of these cretins is already reflected throughout the paper
at no additional charge.
By the way, the ad made no call for the release of the Israeli hostages. That
would get in the way of peace! Not to mention the even more important goal
of surrender to terrorism. In that goal they have an ally in Hezbollah's home
town newspaper, The Beirut Times. [go
