Koppel Says, Let Iran Have Nukes
Why can't the media see the evil before us?
by Joel
Rosenberg [novelist]

The bewitching of the American media by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continues unabated. I've written before about Mike Wallace, Brian Williams, Anderson Cooper, and Time magazine fundamentally misunderstanding and thus misreporting the existential threat to the U.S., Israel and our allies posed by Ahmadinejad and his feverish bid for nuclear weapons. Now award-winning ABC News journalist Ted Koppel has actually written an oped for the New York Times and International Herald Tribune suggesting that the American people "bow to the inevitable" and allow Iran to have nuclear weapons.

"If Iran is bound and determined to have nuclear weapons, let it," Koppel wrote. "The elimination of American opposition on this issue would open the way to genuine normalization between our two nations. It might even convince the Iranians that their country can flourish without nuclear weapons. But this should also be made clear to Tehran: If a dirty bomb explodes in Milwaukee, or some other nuclear device detonates in Baltimore or Wichita, if Israel or Egypt or Saudi Arabia should fall victim to a nuclear 'accident,' Iran should understand that the U.S. government will not search around for the perpetrator. The return address will be predetermined, and it will be somewhere in Iran."
Ted Turner recently suggested Iran be allowed to have ten nuclear bombs. But Turner is a nut. Few take him seriously. Koppel, on the other hand, is a highly-respected journalist. His views will not only have impact among the journalistic and political elites, they actually reflect a growing sentiment among the elites that there's no point in stopping Iran -- the mullahs should just have nuclear weapons if they want them and we'll deal with the aftermath later. Later, as in after hundreds of thousands or millions lie dead and dying amidst a mushroom cloud. Nothing could be more foolish and short-sighted.
To misunderstand the nature and threat of evil is to risk being blindsided by it. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his regime represent evil of the kind we have rarely seen since the rise of Adolf Hitler. And Iran is not isolated. Ahmadinejad has found a willing nuclear ally in Russian President Vladimir Putin. What's more, Iran is building economic and military alliances with China, North Korea, Venezuela, and Cuba -- not to mention Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas, and Sudan. Moreover, as I explain in Epicenter, Ahmadinejad has a timetable. He believes the end of the world is coming in the next few years. He believes that it is his religious mission to annihilate Judeo-Christian civilization as we know. He is fixated on hastening the coming of the Islamic Messiah known as the Twelfth Imam or the Mahdi. He already has long-range missiles that can reach Israel and Europe. Now, Iran is working closely with North Korea to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles that will soon be able to reach the United States. The threat is real and it is rising, even if Koppel & Company cannot see it. Let us pray that President Bush and his advisors will see the evil clearly and have the moral courage to take whatever action is necessary, before we are blindsided by a war of cataclysmic proportions.
