What
Bush Should Do
by Joel
Rosenberg [novelist]
7/17/06 |
The
rapidly intensifying war against Israel -- funded,
fueled and driven by proxies of Iran and Syria -- poses
a critical test for President Bush at the G8 Summit
in St. Petersburg. The leader of the free world must
make it crystal clear that Vladimir Putin has an urgent
choice to make: Russia can choose free markets, free
elections, open trade and a peaceful and positive relationship
with the West....or it can choose to side with dangerous
and diabolical regimes such as Iran and Syria. It cannot
do both.

-
Russia has signed
a $1 billion deal to sell missiles and other weaponry
to Iran,
despite the fact that Iran
has called on the Muslim world to envision
a world without the United States, repeatedly called
for Israel to be "wiped
off the map," and denied the Holocaust
ever happened.
-
Russia has continued
to sell nuclear technology
to Iran, despite the fact
that much of the West is
convinced Iran is trying to build, buy or steal nuclear
weapons.
-
Russia has agreed
to sell missiles to Syria.
-
Russia has resisted
U.S. and European efforts
to place sanction on Iran (or
North
Korea) for threatening to annihilate sovereign nations
and for
repeatedly
lying
about the development
of its
nuclear program.
-
Russia has agreed
to sell arms to Hamas, and Mr.
Putin has denied
that Hamas is a terrorist
organization.
-
Russia has sat
by passively as Iran
and Syria have
created a formal
defensive alliance
against the U.S.,
Israel and moderate
Arab regimes
in the Middle
East.
-
Such
behavior is absolutely
unacceptable. As the
Bush Doctrine
states: in the
War on Terror,
you're either
with us, or
against us. If
you aid and abet
terrorist groups
or terrorist
states, then
you must pay the
consequences. Thus
far, Russia
has sided with
the forces of terror,
not the forces
of freedom.
The U.S., therefore, should reverse course and
refuse to approve Russia's bid to enter the World Trade
Organization
(WTO) unless and until Russia demonstrates conclusively
that it has stopped selling missiles, nuclear technology
and other weapons systems to the terror masters in Tehran
and Damascus and until Russia proves willing to challenge
these rogue states (and Pyongyang) forcefully and decisively
in the U.N. Security Council. As of right now, the U.S.
is set to approve Russia accession to the WTO within
the next few days.
President Bush should also:
-
Publicly question whether Russia
should be a member of the G8 given its increasingly
close ties
to terrorist states
like Iran and Syria, not to mention Mr. Putin's
aggressive attacks against free markets and free
elections within
Russia.
-
Use the bully pulpit to highlight
Iran and Syria's complicity in this unfolding new war
against
Israel.
-
Publicly and vigorously defend
Israel's right to self-defense.
-
Veto any and all U.N.
resolutions that would condemn Israel for
trying to defend
herself.
-
Make sure the
Pentagon is fully prepared with
contingency
plans to launch
a massive air attack against
Iran
to destroy her nuclear
program if
diplomacy fails.
-
Call on Congress
for
a dramatic increase
in
funding to complete
a
workable missile defense
shield
to protect Americans
and our allies,
particularly
those in the
Middle
East and East Asia.
Iran
and Syria's
two-front war
against Israel
is quickly
spinning out
of control.
Hundreds
of thousands
of innocent
Israeli, Palestinian
and Lebanese
families are
suffering
because of
it and
the apocalyptic
events I
wrote
about fictionally
in The
Ezekiel
Option suddenly
now look
increasingly
plausible.
It is time for President Bush to draw a line
in the sand with Mr. Putin. The President should truly
challenge the
emerging political and military alliance Russia is making
with Iran and Syria. Russia is helping make the Middle
East a very dangerous place, and let's be clear: if the
Kremlin doesn't reverse course immediately, the worst
may be yet to come. CRO
