MONDAY Bad Day At Blacksburg
by Burt
Prelutsky [scriptwriter] 4/23/07 |
In the recent past, two unrelated news items grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go. One, of course was the senseless massacre at Virginia Tech. The other is the proposed piece of congressional legislation known as the U.S./Mexico Social Security Totalization Treaty.
Both are prime examples of what happens when the deranged are allowed to run the asylum. In the case of the Treaty, the nuts in Congress have chosen to ignore the fact that Social Security, the greatest Ponzi scheme in the history of the world, which is already in risk of imploding, would be further jeopardized by including millions of illegal aliens and their families.

What is it with these people in Washington, D.C.? Is there something funny about the water in our nation’s capitol? If our politicians aren’t trying to extend the protection of the Geneva Convention to people who have never agreed to abide by it -- butchers who neither wear uniforms nor fight under any nation’s flag -- they’re busy doing all they can to encourage Mexico’s criminals and chronically unemployed to find a safe and profitable haven in America.
As I have written on other occasions, I have nothing against Mexicans, but why is it we’re supposed to be the only country on earth without actual borders or a rational immigration policy or elected officials, for that matter, who give a hoot? It’s certainly not that our politicians have softer hearts than their counterparts in Germany, Brazil, Australia, Japan or Mexico, for that matter. What they seem to have in great abundance are softer heads.
By this time, much has been said and written about the tragic events that took place in Blacksburg. Naturally, much of the attention has been focused on guns. As usual, those on the Left have insisted that it’s simply more evidence that guns should be removed from society. Those on the Right, being far more logical, respond by pointing out that if somebody at Virginia Tech, besides Seung-hui Cho, had been armed, the death toll would have been far less.
It seems to me that leftists always come out of these exchanges looking hopelessly naïve. Inasmuch as any time folks begin fantasizing about deporting illegal aliens, someone is sure to point out how difficult, even impossible, it would be to round up 12-14 million people, I have to wonder how liberals would propose rounding up well over 200,000,000 guns in America. Frankly, I don’t even understand why liberals have made the confiscation of firearms from law-abiding citizens a major plank of their platform. I mean, any fool must realize that criminals, whose guns tend to be unregistered, aren’t about to surrender their gats, but would love nothing better than to be certain their prey was in no position to shoot back.
While I readily acknowledge that if you want to kill someone, guns are a pretty convenient way of getting it done, I should point out that we humans were killing and being killed long before guns were even invented. And even in modern times, the likes of Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer and Timothy McVeigh, earned their way into Hell without, so far as I can recall, ever firing a shot. Furthermore, most of the victims of Islamic terrorism in Iraq, Israel, Spain and the United States, are not victimized by gunmen.
The most shocking aspect in the aftermath of the massacre is the discovery that Cho’s insanity had been recognized in the past, but because he hadn’t yet reached the boiling point, he was allowed to take his own sweet time simmering away in his madness.
There are those Monday morning quarterbacks who now say that Cho should have been expelled from Virginia Tech. I think they’re missing the big picture. Once he was ready to go on his killing spree, only the venue might have been different. Instead of slaughtering 32 people at the university, he might have killed the same number or more at a shopping mall or a nursery school or a movie theater. He had stalked a number of young women and manifested obvious anti-social behavior in his classes and his dorm. Honestly, just on the evidence of his nine-page play, I would have locked him up in a loony bin and, for good measure, given him an F in creative writing.
There are only a few things about this sad and sordid mess for which I’m grateful. The first is that it knocked all mention of Anna Nicole Smith off the media’s radar. Next, by airing Cho’s video, NBC came under attack in a way no major network has experienced since 2004, when Dan Rather’s arrogant disregard for the truth made “Anchor’s Aweigh” my favorite piece of music.
And, finally, best of all, because Cho committed suicide, we were spared the spectacle of his defense attorney trying to convince a jury that his client was merely the victim of an evil society’s cruel indifference.
I understand that Cho had given himself a Muslim name, although I don’t believe he ever practiced the religion. But, from what we know about the miserable creep, it’s my hunch that, by killing 32 decent Americans, he was pinning his hopes on winding up with those 72 virgins in Paradise.
For my part, I just hope the 72 ladies are beating the holy crap out of him. CRO
